I'm working on world building. The part where we're given a little bit of lore for a head start and the rest is up to us. Sometimes I get stuck though.
Someone posted this on Tumblr:
And it got me thinking, how do breed change scrolls work? Would there a reason for them as far as dragons go? Do they not exist and the dragon was <insert breed here> all along? What does your head cannon say about these?

My headcanon for these is that a breed changed dragon has been exalted but the Dragon God judge him/her to not have lived a fulfilling life. That the newly exalted dragon could have accomplished more before being exalted or simply they lived a life in a form that they personally weren't pleased with, thus living their whole life with a certain bittersweet feeling. Then the Dragon God sends them back in a form that they judge represents the dragon's true self or potential.

My headcanon for scrolled dragons varies based on the dragon. xD I like the thought of some of my scrolled dragons thinking, "I'LL HAVE YOU KNOW I USED TO BE A GIANT GUARDIAN! YOU SHOULD'VE FOUGHT ME TWO WEEKS AGO AND SEE HOW FAR YOU GOT," when they get KO'd in the Coliseum.
But then I have some where I just pretend they've always been that way. 8) Never mind their parents' species, they were a miracle hatchling.
As for the scrolling itself, I've never thought about how that'd be presented in-universe. Maybe I just sneak up on my dragons out of the blue, shout some demonic-sounding words off the scroll page, then BOOM! They are different. No warning, no explanation, this is their life now and they will adjust. c:

You open the scroll and dust flies out covering the dragon who opened it. Tada new form.

The dragon opens the scroll, and a fairy who is also a wizard pops out. He then yells at the dragon for a few minutes about inane things, then uses his little wizard fairy wand and zaps the dragon into what the scroll says. He then complains that his job sucks, then is whisked away to do another breed changy-thing. At the end of the day, he goes home, puts his coat and hat on the rack and is hugged by his wife and children. They have a wonderful roast insect dinner and talk about how the kids are doing at school before retiring to the livingroom for some tv before they go to bed.

I never really thought about this myself to be honest... though really, I'd probably blame The Arcanist He seems to be behind pretty much everything xD

i reckon the dragon eats the scroll like a vitamin tablet and lo and behold they miraculously turn into said breed or start coming up in said gene

I tend to avoid breed-changing any of my dragons for exactly this reason. XD I've got a Ridgeback who used to be a Tundra, and I think she's still very much a Tundra on the inside, so I don't feel like I can just deny that it ever happened. :c Some of these are good ideas, though!

I may write a story about how I breedchanged one of my dragons. I think of it as different situations depending on the dragon, too.
Might I say, though, I enjoy many of yous' theories here.

I like to think it's a mishap with an extremely magical scroll. Accidentally touch it, BAM! you're something else now, better get used to a new life as whatever. Or mama cheated on her mate behind his back. |D The gene markings can be played up as mutations they had when they were born or something, like how albinism is.

I'd like to think it makes them slowly mutate.
Man I wish there was a two headed breed.

Leth was my first breed changed dragon, I changed him from I think fae to pearlcatcher. In his case, he was the first shadow dragon in my lair (I'm fire) and I headcannoned that he'd been adopted and as a young adult went away briefly to find out more about himself and the shadow flight. I like to think he discovered something that needed a lot of reflection to make sense out of, so he meditated for a long period of time and somehow unlocked long-forgotten genetics within himself that then changed him.
